Acetyl-L-phenylalanine amide (ALPA) is a phospholipid that can be synthesized from the hydrolysis of cerebroside and acetyl-L-phenylalanine. ALPA has been shown to have a variety of effects on the brain, including stimulating the release of acetylcholine in neurons, inhibiting the synthesis of phosphatidylethanolamine, and promoting the synthesis of phosphatidylserine. ALPA also acts as an antioxidant by scavenging reactive oxygen species and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. It is possible that ALPA may be used to treat Alzheimer's disease or other neurodegenerative disorders.
