(3S,4S)-4-Amino-3-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanoic acid is an analog of (2R,3R)-2-amino-3-(hydroxymethyl)butanoic acid. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV), which breaks down tripeptides and inhibits immune responses. This inhibition causes hypotension in rats and humans. (3S,4S)-4-Amino-3-hydroxy-5-phenylpentanoic acid also has an isostere group that can be used as a substrate analogue for the formation of tripeptides. The hydrogen bond with the hydroxyl group on C1' plays an important role in its potency as an inhibitor of DPPIV.
