DL-Ala-Gly-OH is a neutral, metalloprotease inhibitor. It has been shown to inhibit the activities of various proteases, including serine proteases (e.g., plasmin and trypsin), as well as metallo-proteinases (e.g., elastase). The conformational properties and inhibitory effects of DL-Ala-Gly-OH have been studied using enzyme assays, structural analysis, and microalgal antibody response. This compound also inhibits protein synthesis in vivo by binding to the ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis. DL-Ala-Gly-OH is a hydrogen bond donor and can be detected in the nmr spectra of fatty acids.
