Description:

(R,S)-3-Amino-3-(3-pyridyl)propionic acid is a crystalline powder that is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the growth of fungi and bacteria, and also exhibits antipyretic and analgesic activities. The (R,S) diastereomer has been demonstrated to be more potent than the racemic mixture in inhibiting bacterial and fungal growth. (R,S)-3-Amino-3-(3-pyridyl)propionic acid can be synthesized by the reaction of propionic acid with 3-aminopropanol. The salt can be separated into its constituent enantiomers by recrystallization from water or ethanol.
