L-2-Amino-5-phenylpentanoic acid is a linker molecule that is used in the synthesis of peptides and proteins. It is an analog to L-leucine, which has been shown to be effective against hepatitis C. L-2-Amino-5-phenylpentanoic acid can be synthesized from L-leucine by hydrogenation through the use of palladium on charcoal. This compound was also used for antigen preparation in a study involving HIV and gramicidin. L-2-Amino-5-phenylpentanoic acid can be used as a potential antiviral agent because it inhibits the activity of chloride channels on the surface of viruses such as influenza A virus, HIV and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
