3-Aminopyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid benzyl ester is an optically active compound that is a condensation product of 3-aminopyrrolidine and benzoic acid. It is also a racemic mixture of two enantiomers. The optical activity of this compound can be converted to the other enantiomer by alkalization or hydrochloric acid, and the racemic form can be resolved into its two optical forms by decarboxylation. This compound has been reported to be a major pollutant in Beijing and other cities in China due to its high production volume. 3-Aminopyrrolidine-1-carboxylic acid benzyl ester is soluble in water and alcohols, but insoluble in ethers, hexanes, chloroform, and petroleum ether.
