3-Acetyl-4-iodoindole (3AI) is a pharmaceutical agent that can be used as a diagnostic tool for glomerular filtration rate (GFR). It is not only an indicator of kidney function but also an indicator of the efficiency of other organs, such as the bowel and immune system. The GFR test can be done by injecting 3AI intravenously into a patient and measuring the amount of 3AI excreted in their urine over time. This test is often performed before and after surgery to see if the GFR has improved. The GFR test can also be used to assess whether or not a patient is at risk for chronic kidney disease or bowel disease. A decrease in GFR may result in increased levels of 3AI in the urine, which would indicate that kidney function is decreasing.
