4-Amino-pyridin-2-ol is a protonated amine that has been shown to have the ability to elongate RNA. It is also capable of modifying the RNA by saponifying it, which may be due to its chloride and hydroxyl groups. 4-Amino-pyridin-2-ol has been shown to modify nucleobases in DNA and RNA molecules. This modification may be due to the anomeric effect, where the oxygen on the opposite side of the nitrogen becomes more acidic than usual. 4-Amino-pyridin-2-ol has been shown in biological studies to inhibit deoxynucleosides from binding with nucleobases, preventing protein synthesis.
