2-Amino-4-(chloromethyl)thiazole hydrochloride is an activating agent that stabilizes the fatty acid thioester. The chloride ion in this compound is a nucleophile and reacts with the amine group to form the thiazolidinedione intermediate, which is further stabilized by the sterculic acid. This product has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the enzyme delta-9 desaturase, which converts oleic acid into linoleic acid. 2-Amino-4-(chloromethyl)thiazole hydrochloride can be used in a multistep process to synthesize fatty acids.
