1-Acetyl-3-indolinone is an indolium compound that can be used as a fluorescence probe for amines, chlorine atoms, and nucleophiles. It has been used to study tuberculosis and has shown inhibitory concentration values against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the range of 0.1 to 1 mM. This compound is synthetically produced from luzindole, which is a natural product found in the bark of the African tree Luzula multiflora. The synthesis of this compound is very efficient and it can be made using a minimal amount of reagents such as hydrochloric acid.
