Description

cis-Aconitic anhydride is a receptor analog that binds to the cellular nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It was found to be a potent antimicrobial agent against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeast at concentrations of 0.1 mM or higher. The binding of cis-aconitic anhydride to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor has been shown to inhibit phagocytosis in human serum, which may be due to its ability to generate reactive oxygen species. A monoclonal antibody against cis-aconitic anhydride has also been developed for use as a diagnostic reagent for carotenoids.
