Aluminum(III) fluoride is an inorganic compound that has been shown to be a metastable form of aluminum trifluoroacetate. It is produced by the reaction of hydrogen fluoride with aluminium metal at low temperatures and high pressures. The metastable form is stable at room temperature, and can be used as a laboratory reagent or as a catalyst for organic reactions. Aluminum(III) fluoride is used in analytical chemistry for determining hydroxyl ions, which are present in the plasma mass spectrometry process. The metastable form can also react with sodium carbonate to produce hydrogen gas and aluminum oxide, which can then be processed into aluminum metal.
