4-Amino-5-(2-furyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (FAT) is a sulfanyl that is structurally related to the triazoles. It inhibits the HIV transcriptase, which is an enzyme involved in the production of viral RNA. The mechanism of FAT's inhibitory effect on HIV is still unclear, but it may involve alkylation of key amino acids in the enzyme, resulting in a loss of function or dimerization. FAT has been shown to have cytopathogenicity and cytotoxicity against different cell lines, including cells from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1).
