2-Amino-3-cyanothiophene has been shown to be a strong inhibitor of the polymerization of carrageenan, an additive in toothpaste, shampoo, and other products. This compound is able to inhibit the polymerization of carrageenan by acting as a nucleophile and reacting with the activated chloride groups at the end of the polysaccharide chain. 2-Amino-3-cyanothiophene can also react with amines on the surface of bacteria to form active chloramines that are lethal to bacteria. The optimal reaction temperature for this compound is between 77 and 83 degrees Celsius.
2-Amino-3-cyanothiophene can be used as a drug target for its potential therapeutic effects against bacterial infections.
