3-Amino-2,6-lutidine is a substructure of several drugs that has been extensively studied. It is synthesized by the reaction of nitrous acid with aniline and can be used to prepare active analogs of the drug prochlorperazine. This compound has been shown to have an interaction with nitrite, which may be due to its n-oxide or nitro functional groups. 3-Amino-2,6-lutidine has also been shown to have a high level of antibacterial activity against protozoan parasites in mice. This compound is soluble in both sodium hydroxide solution and water, but not in ethanol or ether.
