Description

3-Aminocrotononitrile is a synthetic chemotherapeutic agent that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It prevents the synthesis of DNA, RNA and proteins. 3-Aminocrotononitrile binds to the active methylene group on the DNA molecule, blocking DNA synthesis and preventing replication. It also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the amino groups on ribosomes. 3-Aminocrotononitrile is metabolized into an enolate anion, which reacts with chloride ions to form a diacetonitrile linkage between two nitrogen atoms of the compound. This reaction produces ethylene diamine as a byproduct.
