5-Amino-2-pyridone (5AP) is a synthetic molecule that exhibits potent and selective activity against influenza virus neuraminidase. It binds to the protein in a hydrophobic pocket and protonates the active site, preventing it from functioning. The 5AP-inhibited neuraminidase has been shown to be active against influenza A and B viruses as well as avian H1N1 virus. 5AP has been optimized for use in animal models, with studies showing that it is effective for treatment of influenza when administered intranasally or by aerosol. 5AP also inhibits the replication of other RNA viruses, including Sindbis virus and vesicular stomatitis virus.
