4-Amino-1-methylpyrrole-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester hydrochloride (4AMP) is a target compound that inhibits nitrification. Nitrification is the process by which ammonia is oxidized to nitrite, and then to nitrate, by bacteria in the soil. This process also produces nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. 4AMP inhibits this process by preventing acylation of methylpyrrole, which is an intermediate in the process of converting ammonia to nitrite. 4AMP prevents the formation of carboxylate groups on the pyrrole ring, thus preventing esterification with acetic acid and stopping the production of methane. 4AMP has been shown to be effective at inhibiting nitrification in soil samples from agricultural fields.
