(+)-2-Amino-1-butanol is a synthetic amino alcohol that has been shown to reduce blood pressure. It is a competitive inhibitor of glutamate dehydrogenase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of l-threonine and other amino acids. (+)-2-Amino-1-butanol binds to the active site of glutamate dehydrogenase and blocks access to the substrate, preventing conversion from glutamate to α-ketoglutarate. This inhibition leads to a decrease in blood pressure by decreasing the production of l-threonine, which is an important precursor for many neurotransmitters and hormones. (+)-2-Amino-1-butanol also has antimycobacterial activity against mycobacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex.
