4-Amino-4'-cyanobiphenyl is a fluorescent dye that can be used in devices for optical and photocurrent measurements. It is soluble in p-toluenesulfonic acid, vinylene, and other organic solvents. 4-Amino-4'-cyanobiphenyl has been shown to exhibit excellent photovoltaic properties. The electron transfer from the imine moiety to the carbostyril group leads to a band gap of about 1.5 eV, which is desirable for solar cells. This compound also exhibits high pressure stability, which makes it suitable for use in pressure sensors. The most interesting feature of this compound is its ability to emit light with an intense spectrum when irradiated with UV light or excited by electrochemical studies.
