4,4'-Azoxydiphenetole is a colorless liquid that has a phase transition temperature of -16.5 degrees Celsius. It is not soluble in water but can be dissolved in alcohols and ethers. This compound is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of some pesticides (e.g., biphenyl) and pharmaceuticals (e.g., benzalkonium chloride). 4,4'-Azoxydiphenetole interacts with acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction to produce muscle contraction and can also be used for antiseptic purposes (e.g., in mouthwashes). 4,4'-Azoxydiphenetole and its homologues have been shown to have a reaction rate that varies with the activation energy of the reaction. The chromatographic science behind this phenomenon is still being studied by scientists.
