5-Amino-6-chloro-2,3-dicyanopyrazine has been shown to be an antibacterial agent that inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. 5-Amino-6-chloro-2,3-dicyanopyrazine binds to metal cations and anions, such as Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, and Mn4+ ions. It also binds to the nucleophilic site on the enzyme protein synthesis, which is required for the production of proteins. The fluorophore in this molecule is sensitive to changes in pH and has been used as a reporter molecule to study bacterial responses to different environments. The chemical structures of this molecule make it suitable for use in organic synthesis. This compound is less toxic than other antibiotics because it does not bind to DNA or RNA.
