Description:

4-Amino-2,6-dimethylpyridine is a weak base with acidic properties. It is used in the synthesis of 4-aminoantipyrine and 2,6-dimethylaniline. The acidity of amines can be reversed by adding an aqueous solution of calcium carbonate to the reaction mixture. Reactions involving amines are enhanced at pH levels below 7, which is due to the release of ammonia gas. Furfural reacts with amines to produce pyrrole derivatives and also reacts with amines to form nitroso derivatives. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be used to determine the structure of organic compounds that contain amines by using nitrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). When using surface methodology, such as solid phase microextraction (SPME), an organic compound containing amines can be extracted from a liquid or solid sample and then analyzed by GCMS or NMR.
