4-Androsten-11beta-ol-3,17-dione is a steroid that is produced in the human body from dehydroepiandrosterone. It is an androgen and has been shown to have anticancer activities. 4-Androsten-11beta-ol-3,17-dione can be used for the treatment of cancer cells in vitro by inhibiting DNA polymerase activity. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of single strand breaks in DNA, which activates the cell's DNA repair mechanisms, causing cell death. 4-Androsten-11beta-ol-3,17-dione also inhibits lysine residues on enzymes that are involved in steroid hormone synthesis and has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cells in vivo and clinical studies.
