3-Acetaminophenol is a metabolite of acetaminophen and has been shown to have analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. 3-Acetaminophenol is excreted in the urine after ingestion of acetaminophen, which can be detected by its fluorescence properties. It also binds to the same receptor as acetaminophen, but with a lower affinity. The binding affinity of 3-acetaminophenol for the receptor may be responsible for the analgesic effect observed at low doses, while higher doses inhibit the enzyme activity of hepatic microsomes. 3-acetaminophenol has been shown to cause toxicity in rats and mice at high doses, but not at low doses.
