1-Amino-3-methylurea is a synthetic chemical that can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is an electrophile and reacts with nucleophiles such as chloride to form the corresponding amide. 1-Amino-3-methylurea has antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, by reacting with the azide group of proteins. The nitrogen atom in this compound acts as a nucleophile and attacks the azide group of proteins, forming an intermediate called dictamnine. Matrine is an isomer of 1-amino-3-methylurea and has been shown to have antiinflammatory properties.
