(R)-(-)-1-Aminoethylphosphonic acid is an antibacterial agent that has been shown to be effective against a variety of bacteria, including strains resistant to other antibiotics. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the active site of the enzyme phosphonate racemase, which converts L-alanine and D-alanine into L-alanine and meso-diaminopropionic acid. This binding prevents the enzyme from catalyzing reactions. (R)-(-)-1-Aminoethylphosphonic acid also inhibits the synthesis of DNA, protein, and RNA in bacterial cells. The kinetic studies on this compound have shown that it has a higher affinity for racemases with an exosporium than those without.
