Allyl methyl carbonate (AMC) is a potent antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of aryl halides. It is a synthetic chemical but has been found naturally in garlic and other plants. AMC is a liquid that can be applied to surfaces or used for dipping. The allyl group reacts with chlorine and other halogens to form an intermediate that reacts with an oxygen molecule from the air, which leads to the release of hydrogen fluoride gas. This reaction gives AMC its high resistance to compounds such as fluorine and hydrogen fluoride.
