Anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid disodium salt is a fluorescent compound that is used as a probe in chromatographic and bioanalytical applications. It has been used to detect copper ions and hydrophobic compounds. Anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid disodium salt is also an insensitive photosensitizer that can be activated by irradiation with UV light. Anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid disodium salt has been shown to be toxic to both plants and animals in the presence of certain metals. This derivative of anthracene is also resistant to phenothiazine, which makes it useful for determining the nature of unknown substances.
