Ammonium hexafluoroaluminate is a polymeric material that is used as an abrasive in wastewater treatment. It consists of aluminum particles embedded in a polymeric matrix. The chemical reactions that take place during the treatment process can be summarized by the following reaction mechanism:
AlF3 + 3NaOH → Al(OH)3 + 6HF
AlF3 + 2NH4Cl → AlCl3 + 3H2O
AlF3 + NH4OH → AlO(OH)2 + 3H2O
Ammonium hexafluoroaluminate has been shown to react with fluoride ions, forming hydrogen fluoride and aluminum fluoride, which are highly corrosive. Ammonium hexafluoroaluminate also reacts with potassium dichromate, releasing ammonium and hydrogen chloride gas.
