The tertiary structure of (1R,3S,4S)-3-amino-4-fluorocyclopentanecarboxylic acid was determined by X-ray crystallography. The compound crystallizes in the space group P2 with a unit cell dimensions of a = b = 8.5 Å and c = 12.9 Å. The molecule is composed of four molecules of (1R,3S,4S)-3-amino-4-fluorocyclopentanecarboxylic acid linked head to tail in a left handed helix. This structure is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between the amide groups and an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl group at C2 and the carboxylate group at C1.
