(2S)-2-Amino-3-(2-fluoro-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) propanoic acid is a fluorinated amino acid that is used as a biochemical tool in the study of the uptake of dopamine. It can be synthesized by reacting (2S)-phenylglycine with 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The synthesis of this compound is selective for the alpha carbon and does not occur at other positions on the benzene ring. This amino acid also has tyrosinase inhibitory properties and can be used to induce hyperinsulinism in animals.
