Rhizoma dioscoreae is a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat cancer and inflammatory diseases. It contains a number of saponins, including 4-amino-1-(beta-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-fluoro-2(1H)-pyrimidinone (ABAFP). ABAFP has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro, by triggering apoptosis through an increase in intracellular calcium. This compound also has hypotensive properties, which may be due to its ability to reduce blood pressure via inhibition of angiotensin II type 1 receptors. ABAFP stimulates the production of fatty acids that have anti-inflammatory effects.
