N-Ethylphthalimide is a compound that is used as a starting material in the synthesis of drugs. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of inflammation, which may be due to its ability to deactivate activated phthalimides by nucleophilic attack. N-Ethylphthalimide also inhibits cyclic AMP (cAMP) production and the synthesis of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 and leukotrienes. This compound can be synthesized with high yield from dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, which is produced from acetonitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate. The reaction scheme for this synthesis can be seen below:
N-Ethylphthalimide
+ Acetonitrile
→ Dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate
+ Ethane
