4-Oxo-4H-chromene-2-carbonyl chloride is a molecule that has been shown to have antitumor activity. It is an osmotic agent and has been used as a solvent for the synthesis of other biologically active molecules. 4-Oxo-4H-chromene-2-carbonyl chloride binds to DNA, forming covalent and noncovalent complexes with it. The binding of this compound to DNA results in the formation of ion gradients, which disrupts the homologous recombination repair system. This leads to mutations in DNA that can lead to cancer. 4-Oxo-4H-chromene-2-carbonyl chloride also has antiinflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
