3-[(3-Methacrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]propane-1-sulfonate (MAPS) is a synthetic, hydrophilic, cationic monomer. It is soluble in water and has high reactivity with both anions and cations. MAPS can be used to synthesize polymers at temperatures between 0°C and 100°C. MAPS has a hydroxyl group that can be used to form crosslinks with other MAPS molecules or with other hydrophilic monomers such as acrylamide. The trimethylammonium chloride (TACL) anion gives the polymer a high degree of hydrophilicity by converting it into a quaternary ammonium salt. This salt also reduces the solubility of the polymer in water, which allows for the synthesis of hydrolytically stable polymers.
