3-Hydroxy-4-phenylbutan-2-one is a chemical compound that has been shown to be produced by the reaction of phenylacetonitrile and hydrogen peroxide. This compound has been used to produce high values in assays, such as mass spectrometry methods, methodologies and reaction products. 3-Hydroxy-4-phenylbutan-2-one can also be produced by the hydrolysis of caffeine or fatty acids. It is a reagent for the determination of chromatographic properties and can be used to identify pentane, hplc analysis and lumichrome. The chemical is also used in the production of diethyl succinate.
