Description

Metomidate is a low potency drug that is used as an anesthetic. It has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties in humans, with the drug being absorbed rapidly and eliminated slowly. Metomidate is currently approved for use in imaging procedures, such as computed tomography (CT) scans, because it has no effect on the brain or heart. It also has been shown to be useful in diagnosing infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and malaria. The drug binds to cortisol-binding globulin (CBG), which prevents its activation by the enzyme 11β-hydroxylase. This results in a decrease of serum cortisol concentration, which may be useful for monitoring adrenocortical function during surgery.
