Methyl 9-oxo-9H-fluorene-1-carboxylate (MOC) is a histone methyltransferase inhibitor that has been shown to be clastogenic and effector proteins in cells. It has also been demonstrated to be carcinogenic in animal models. It is thought to inhibit the demethylation of histone H3 lysine 4 by methylating the amide group of the side chain, which prevents nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon. MOC also inhibits cancer cells by inhibiting actin polymerization, which is required for cell motility and survival.
