2-[2-(Carboxymethoxy)phenoxy]acetic acid is a carboxylate anion that is structurally related to the more common 2-hydroxyphenol. It is a tetradentate ligand that can bind to metal ions and has been shown to inhibit the growth of adenocarcinoma A549 cells. The optical properties of this compound are due to its conjugation with a carboxylic acid group and an ether group, which causes it to be polar. 2-[2-(Carboxymethoxy)phenoxy]acetic acid has been shown to have bifunctional properties, as it binds both the metal ion and the protein at the same time. This reaction mechanism has been determined through titration methods. The chemical analyses of this molecule were performed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR).
