Glutaranilic acid is a cyclic, carboxy-substituted benzylic amide. It is synthesized by the condensation of benzyl alcohol and dipropylamine. It has been shown to be a competitive antagonist of glutamate at the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, preventing excitotoxicity. This drug also has hydrophobic properties and can be immobilized on different surfaces, such as glass beads or polystyrene plates. Glutaranilic acid has been shown to have specific interactions with other molecules, such as an analyzing molecule for glutamic acid in urine specimens.
