2-Phenyl-1,3-dithiane is a reactive molecule that can be synthesized by the reaction of phenylmagnesium bromide with nitroethane. It has been shown to be an excellent hydrogen sulfate scavenger and has been used in the synthesis of calcium carbonate. 2-Phenyl-1,3-dithiane has also been used as a model compound for reactive molecules. The redox potentials of 2-phenyl-1,3-dithiane are found at -0.06 V (vs SHE). This value is relatively constant and is not affected by pH or the presence of other ions. The chemical analyses show that it does not contain any sulfur atoms and its molecular weight is 169 g/mol. A kinetic study showed that 2-phenyl-1,3-dithiane is stable only when it is in contact with hydrochloric acid.
