Ethyl 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitro-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate is a prodrug that is metabolized to form the active form, methimazole. Methimazole has been used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism and has been shown to be effective in treating pediatric patients with Graves' disease. Methimazole has also been used as an antipsychotic agent for children and adults. It is not currently approved for use in the United States but can be obtained through investigational new drug applications. Ethyl 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitro-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate is converted by an enzyme called dehydrogenase into methimazole, which inhibits the production of thyroid hormones. This conversion process can be monitored by testing plasma concentrations of methimazole following administration of ethyl 3,5-dimethyl 4 nitro 1H p
