2-Chloro-5-methylbenzene-1,4-diol (2CMBD) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H6Cl2O. It is an indole derivative. 2CMBD is a colorless liquid that has a melting point of −9.8°C and boiling point of 148°C. The compound is soluble in water, but not alcohols or ethers. 2CMBD can be synthesized by reacting 2,3-dimethoxybenzaldehyde with chloroacetone in the presence of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. This reaction produces 2CMBD as well as 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid and formaldehyde.
