2-(4-Methoxybenzyl)malononitrile (2MBM) is a synthetic chemical that is used for the synthesis of penicillin. 2MBM is synthesized by condensation of β-unsaturated ketones with malononitrile and methanol in water at ambient temperature. The reaction is catalyzed by microorganisms, such as fungus Penicillium notatum.
2MBM has been shown to be a promising starting material for the synthesis of penicillin G, which inhibits bacterial growth by binding to their cell walls and preventing the production of peptidoglycan, an essential component of bacterial cell walls.
