3-(2,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (3DPPA) is a phenolic acid that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria in wastewater treatment. 3DPPA binds to the bacterial cell wall and inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins, leading to cell death. This compound can be used as a diagnostic tool for detecting trifluoroacetic acid in human serum. 3DPPA is also found in the colonic microflora where it may inhibit serotonin reuptake by acting on 5HT receptors.
