1,3-Diazepane-2-thione is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of diazepanes. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and inhibition of bacterial growth. 1,3-Diazepane-2-thione binds to the water molecule in the bacterial cell membrane and prevents the diffusion of chloride ions in and out of the cell. This leads to an increase in pH inside the cell, which causes enzymes essential for bacterial growth to denature, resulting in cell death. 1,3-Diazepane-2-thione also reacts with alkyl halides such as chloride or bromide, leading to alkylation reactions. These reactions cause DNA damage by interfering with DNA replication or repair processes. 1,3-Diazepane-2-thione forms condensation products with hydrogen chloride (HCl) that are toxic for bacteria cells.
