4-Chloro-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indole is an antiviral agent that inhibits viral replication by interfering with the synthesis of RNA and DNA. It is a ligand that binds to a number of nucleosides and ribonucleosides. The addition of 4-chloro-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indole to an indole provides a high yield of phenylated products, which are useful in cross coupling reactions. Spectroscopic data for this compound have been obtained, which show it has a UV maximum at 268 nm and IR maxima at 3461 cm−1 (OH), 3300 cm−1 (C=O) and 1602 cm−1 (N). Deprotection of the 9H group yields the desired product. 4-Chloro-9H-pyrimido[4,5-b]indole is active against viruses such as HIV
