3-(2-Thienyl)propanenitrile is a volatile organic compound that is produced by plants in the family brassicaceae. It is found in canola oil, rapeseed oil, and other plant oils. 3-(2-Thienyl)propanenitrile is formed by nonenzymatic reactions of glucosinolates with sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide. 3-(2-Thienyl)propanenitrile has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and fungi through its ability to inhibit protein synthesis and DNA replication. The inhibition of protein synthesis may be due to its ability to bind to ribosomes and block the binding site for aminoacyl-tRNA.
