Product Information

Name:
4'-Cyano[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid
Synonyms:
  • [1,1'-Biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid, 4'-cyano-
Description:

4'-Cyano[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid (4-CNBP) is an inhibitor of the enzyme 4-nitrophenol hydroxylase. It is used in optical sensors and as a diagnostic agent. The sensor uses the redox reaction between the biphenyl and chloride ions in the presence of hydroxide ions to produce light at 660 nm. This light is then detected by a photodiode or photomultiplier tube. 4-CNBP has been shown to be effective in treating nitrate poisoning by inhibiting the conversion of nitrates to nitrites and preventing their absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
